Lagos, Nigeria – In February 2015, driven by a pan-African spirit and unwavering commitment to sustainable development, Esther Omo Ehikpehae founded the African Alliance for Sustainable Development (AASD). Freshly graduated with a master’s degree in management from a prestigious London university, she decided to use her knowledge and energy to prepare African youth for the challenges of sustainable development, in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
A Pioneering Initiative for Organic Farming
From the very beginning, Esther and a dedicated team devoted their free time to training female farmers in Lagos State in organic agriculture. Very quickly, AASD launched Nigeria’s first fair trade network, opening ten stores exclusively selling certified organic products.
Building on this success, the organization expanded its operations in 2017 to Benin, where a specialized store also opened. Over the years, the initiative grew, and 25 stores were established across five African countries: Nigeria, Benin, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, and Cameroon.
Expansion and Strategic Partnerships
Keen on broadening its impact, Esther Omo Ehikpehae established connections with eco-friendly stores in Morocco, facilitating market access for products from AASD-affiliated cooperatives. This cooperation opened new opportunities for African producers and strengthened the dynamics of intra-African fair trade.
An Impressive Track Record and Future Challenges
Ten years after its founding, the African Alliance for Sustainable Development has become a key player in sustainable development in West and Central Africa. Through its network, hundreds of producers benefit from better valuation of their work, while consumers gain access to healthy and environmentally friendly products.
But the journey is far from over. In the face of climate challenges, the need to enhance sustainable agricultural productivity, and the rise of e-commerce, AASD aims to accelerate its digitalization and strengthen training programs to secure an even brighter future for its beneficiaries.
Towards a Greener and More Inclusive Future
As it celebrates this decade of impact, Esther Omo Ehikpehae and her organization reaffirm their commitment to a resilient and self-sufficient Africa. AASD is set to launch new programs aimed at promoting agroecology, supporting young green entrepreneurs, and developing partnerships with international institutions.
The story of AASD is one of a vision carried by a determined woman and a committed community, a shining example that Africa can, through its own efforts, build a sustainable and prosperous future.
