
Accra, Ghana – Ghana’s Defense Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed were tragically among eight people killed when a military helicopter crashed in the southern Ashanti region on Wednesday, according to the chief of staff to the Ghanaian president.
The crash involved a Z9 helicopter that was en route from the capital city of Accra to Obuasi, a mining town in the southern part of Ghana. The aircraft lost contact with authorities earlier in the day, prompting a search effort that eventually confirmed the devastating news.
In addition to the two government ministers, the other victims included Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, Ghana’s acting deputy national security coordinator, Samuel Sarpong, vice chairman of the National Democratic Congress, and Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate. The three crew members on board were identified as Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Malin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, expressed his deep sorrow over the loss, calling the crash a « national tragedy. » In a video statement, Debrah announced that flags across the nation would fly at half-mast in honor of the victims.
The Ghanaian Armed Forces have since launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, which remains under review. The tragic incident has shaken the country, and the nation mourns the loss of its top officials and military personnel.
