Washington, D.C. — July 6, 2025
In a dramatic turn that could upend the American political landscape, tech mogul Elon Musk announced the formation of a new political force, the « America Party, » signaling a sharp break with former ally Donald Trump and the Republican establishment. This bold move follows the controversial passage of a federal spending bill that Musk vehemently opposed.
Once a close supporter of Trump and head of the now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Musk criticized the president’s signature bill, signed into law on Friday, as fiscally irresponsible and emblematic of a failing bipartisan system.
“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” Musk posted Saturday on X, the social media platform he owns. “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
Tensions Rise Between Musk and Trump
Musk’s move triggered an immediate reaction from Donald Trump, who dismissed the idea of a third party as “ridiculous.”
“The Democrats have lost their way, but it’s always been a two-party system,” Trump said Sunday as he departed New Jersey for Washington. “Three parties have never worked. It just adds confusion.”
Despite Trump’s dismissal, political analysts warn that Musk’s influence — both financial and cultural — could disrupt the traditional balance, especially heading into the 2026 midterm elections. Musk reportedly spent over $250 million supporting Trump during the 2024 campaign, making his defection particularly impactful.
Financial and Political Fallout
The billionaire’s renewed political involvement may carry risks. Musk’s ventures, including Tesla and SpaceX, benefit from extensive government contracts. Political retaliation could harm these interests. Furthermore, early filings with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) revealed several new party entities bearing names such as “America Party,” “DOGE,” or “X,” though none were officially verified. Some used dubious email addresses like wentsnowboarding@yahoo.com or anonymous Protonmail accounts, raising questions about the legitimacy of the filings.
As of Sunday morning, Musk appeared to be crowdsourcing ideas for the party on X, indicating that its development was still in its infancy. However, he has already hinted at aggressive plans for the upcoming elections, including campaigning against lawmakers who supported the spending package.
From Ally to Adversary
Just weeks ago, Musk had expressed intentions to withdraw from politics. But the passage of the bill which he called a “disgusting abomination” reignited his activism. He claimed the legislation would balloon the national debt and undermine economic stability.
“The Republican Party has a clean sweep of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches and STILL had the nerve to massively increase the size of government, expanding the national debt by a record FIVE TRILLION DOLLARS,” Musk wrote on X.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, a former adversary from the DOGE days, commented Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” that while some of Musk’s principles resonate with the public, his personal popularity lags behind.
“I imagine those board members weren’t thrilled about this announcement. They’ll want him focused on business, not politics,” Bessent said.
The Road Ahead
While third-party movements have historically struggled in U.S. politics, Musk’s celebrity status and vast financial resources could change the equation. Whether the America Party will become a genuine political force or join the list of short-lived ventures remains to be seen. For now, one thing is clear: Musk is not stepping back he’s doubling down.
